Organisation Description: Beyond Horizons is a community-based social club dedicated to supporting blind and visually impaired individuals of all ages. We provide a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment where members can make meaningful friendships, build confidence, share knowledge, develop life skills, and embrace technology that enhances independence.
Our organisation was established to tackle isolation, lack of support, and the emotional and practical challenges associated with sight loss—particularly for those newly diagnosed. We ensure that no one faces blindness alone.
### Vision
A world where blindness is not seen as a limitation, but as a different way of experiencing life. Our vision is to strengthen the blind community through empowerment, education, inclusion, peer-to-peer learning, and positive representation. We aim to redefine disability as capability, confidence, and contribution.
### Mission
• To break down barriers to independence using community support and innovative technology.
• To bring blind and visually impaired people together to learn, share skills, and support one another.
• To ensure that every individual—newly diagnosed or lifelong blind—has access to friendship, guidance, and practical help.
• To empower people to live fulfilling, confident lives and achieve their full potential.
### Who We Support
* Blind and visually impaired adults and young people
* Individuals newly experiencing sight loss
* Isolated or vulnerable people needing social contact
* Sighted allies, family members, and carers seeking support and guidance
* Local partners, charities, and community organisations working with disability groups
### What We Do
✅ Monthly In-Person Social Activities
Creating safe environments for building friendships, sharing ideas, and maintaining health and wellbeing.
✅ Monthly Online Community Calls
Accessible group discussions and workshops for people who cannot attend face-to-face or live further away.
✅ Technology Training & Knowledge Sharing
Members demonstrate useful tools such as screen readers, voice assistants, accessibility apps, mobility aids, AI tools, and assistive devices. Every member is valued as a teacher as well as a learner.
✅ Show-and-Tell Educational Videos
Short, practical demonstrations that will be shared with members and the wider community so people everywhere can benefit from our knowledge.
✅ Peer Support & Mentoring
Guidance for individuals newly adjusting to sight loss—emotionally, practically, and socially.
✅ Community Inclusion & Advocacy
We help build public awareness by showing the strengths, talents, and achievements of blind people, challenging stereotypes and promoting independence.
