Organisation Description: Smithills Nature Trail is located in a woodland of outstanding beauty and attracts a range of visitors from local and wider communities. It provides the beauty of a bluebell woods along with an ancient woodland. It has features such as old weirs, sluices and tunnels that have historically controlled the flow of water for local working mills. Previously the woodland was managed. Pathways, wooden walkways and bridges were created to support accessibility and a wide range of wildlife could be seen. Over recent years the trail and woodland has significantly deteriorated resulting in limitations in access.
Smithills Nature Trail Volunteers, a community based group, was formed during the summer of 2024. Its aim is to restore the trail to its former glory, in order to secure continued access for the local and wider community. The group is supported by the Smithills Community Alliance, BMBC and local councillors. It is aligned to the Friends of Smithills Hall (FOSH), a constituted group with charitable status and has built working partnerships with other local, regional and national conservation bodies to secure relevant expertise.Since early 2025 we have been actively working to restore trails, removing invasive non-native species and enhancing the habitats on this 100 acre site.
